Unlocking your PDF
Unlock complete
Details
Remove the open password from a PDF you can already open, using the password you know. The unlocked copy is built in this browser tab. The password is never sent anywhere and never reaches analytics. The result is opened again and its page count and selectable text are checked before the download appears.
How to unlock a PDF
-
Choose a protected PDF
Press Choose a PDF, or drop one on the page. The file stays in this browser tab.
-
Enter the current password
Unlock is selected when this page opens. Enter the password that opens the PDF. Owner-password files may already open without an entry.
-
Unlock the PDF
The password is used only in this tab. It is never included in analytics, the URL or diagnostics.
-
Read the check, then download
The output is opened again without a password. Its pages, page sizes and selectable text must pass before Download appears.
What this page can remove, and what it will not
PDF protection is encryption, not a setting a tool can switch off from the outside. The page content is scrambled with a key, and the password you type is what unwraps that key. Give the right password and every page decodes. Give the wrong one and there is nothing to work with. That is why no honest browser tool removes a password you do not have, and why this one does not offer to try.
One case looks like an exception and is not. Some files open with no prompt but refuse printing or copying. Those carry an owner password that sets permissions on a file anyone can already read, so the content was never encrypted against you. This page can drop that layer because the pages were readable from the start.
Whichever route the file takes, the output is opened again without a password before the download appears. The check compares page count, page sizes and selectable text with the source, so a file that lost pages on the way through never reaches you.
Questions
- Is my PDF or password uploaded?
- No. The PDF, password, unlock operation and verification stay in this browser tab.
- Can it remove a password I do not know?
- No. It removes protection only when the PDF opens with the password you provide, or when an owner-password file already opens without one. It does not guess or crack passwords.
- What if the PDF is not protected?
- The page tells you that there is no password protection to remove and leaves the original unchanged.
- Can I add protection here too?
- Yes. Choose Protect, or open the focused Protect page, then enter and confirm a new password.
- What does the unlock check cover?
- It opens the output without a password, compares its pages, page sizes and selectable text with the source, and refuses a failed output.
- What is the difference between the two PDF passwords?
- An open password, sometimes called a user password, is needed before a reader will show any page at all. An owner password sets permissions such as printing on a file that already opens. This page removes protection from a file you can open, and adds an open password when you choose Protect.
- Does removing a password change the pages?
- No. The pages are copied across without being rewritten and without being turned into pictures. Only the encryption is dropped. The output is opened without a password and compared with the source before the download appears.
