Best PDF scanner app
Before you install a scanner app, check the phone you are holding. iOS and Android both ship a document scanner that finds page edges, corrects the angle and saves a PDF, at no cost and with no account needed. Most people who install an app never needed one. This page starts there, then covers the cases that do.
Your phone already scans
On iPhone the scanner lives in Notes and in Files, under the add button, named Scan Documents. On Android it is in Google Drive under the plus button, and on Pixel and several other builds it sits in the Files app as well. Both find the page edges automatically and save a multi page PDF.
They correct perspective, so a photograph taken at an angle comes out square. They handle several pages in one session. They cost nothing, show no adverts, ask for no account and add no watermark, which is more than most apps in this category manage.
When an app earns its place
Volume and organisation. If you scan receipts every week, or you need the text inside the scan to be searchable, or you want the same document on a laptop five minutes later, an app with sync and text recognition saves real time.
CamScanner is the best known, with capture modes, background removal, text extraction in forty one languages, sync and fax to more than thirty countries, read from its own page on 20 August 2026. Its prices were not reachable, so this page quotes none. Free web suites cover the tidying afterwards rather than the capture: PDF24 and TinyWow both convert and compress on their own servers.
The three things that ruin a scan
Three faults account for almost every unreadable capture, and each has a one second fix.
- Light behind the page. Put the light in front of it rather than behind.
- A curled edge. Put the page flat.
- A moving hand. Rest your elbows.
Those three fixes beat every image setting in every app.
Grey washed out results usually mean the software tried to guess a threshold from a shadow. Move the page away from the shadow rather than raising the contrast, because raising contrast on a bad capture removes faint print you may need later.
What to do after the scan
Scanned PDFs are large, because each page is a full resolution photograph. Set a size target and let four methods work toward it. Scans are the best case for this: on the public test corpus the engine reached the requested target in 88.9 percent of scan runs.
Then fix the order and the angles. Page organising drops the blank sheet you scanned by accident, and rotate and crop turns a sideways page upright. Both run in the tab with nothing uploaded.
If the paper is already a photo
You do not need a scanner app to turn photos you already took into a PDF. The image tool accepts JPG and PNG, while HEIC to PDF accepts HEIC and HEIF. Both preserve decoded pixel dimensions and lay the photos out on A4 or Letter pages in a phone browser.
That is also the escape route if a scanner app has locked your export behind a subscription. Save the pages as images, build the PDF in a tab, and delete the app. The scanning guide walks through the whole sequence.
Questions people ask
- Does my phone already have a document scanner?
- Almost certainly. On iPhone it is in Notes and Files under Scan Documents. On Android it is in Google Drive under the plus button, and often in the Files app too. Both find page edges and save a multi page PDF free.
- When is a scanner app worth installing?
- When you scan often, need the text inside the scan to be searchable, or want the file synced to other devices within minutes. For a handful of pages once a month, the built-in scanner does the same job with no account needed.
- How do I scan several pages into one PDF?
- Both built-in scanners keep capturing until you tell them to stop, then save one PDF. If you end up with separate images instead, the image tool combines them into a single file in a browser.
- Why does my scan look grey and washed out?
- The software guessed a brightness threshold from a shadow. Move the page out of the shadow and light it from the front rather than behind. Fixing the capture beats every contrast setting, which tends to erase faint print.
