How to convert a PDF to JPG

    96 DPI makes a US Letter page 816 by 1,056 pixels, enough for a chat message or a slide. 150 DPI suits email. 300 DPI suits print.

  3. Pick the pages

    Leave every page selected, or type the pages you need, such as 1, 3-5.

  4. Save the JPG or the ZIP

    Each page is drawn on white and saved as a JPG. Each file is opened again and measured before the download is offered.

Choosing a JPG resolution

Resolution controls the number of pixels in each image. At 96 dots per inch, a letter-sized page is about 816 by 1,056 pixels. At 150 DPI it has more than twice that pixel area. At 300 DPI it has nearly ten times the pixel area of the 96 DPI version, so small type stays clearer but the files are larger.

JPG suits scans, photographs and pages with continuous colour. It is a lossy format, so hard text edges can pick up faint halos. For text, charts and flat graphics, use PDF to images and choose PNG. In either format, the output is a picture and no longer contains selectable text.

Picking pages and pixel size

Press Choose pages and a small preview of every page appears with a tick box. Ticking pages writes their numbers into the page box as ranges, such as 1, 3-5, and typing numbers ticks the matching previews. A page entered twice, as in 2, 2-4, is converted once.

Each JPG is the page width and height in points, times the DPI, divided by 72 and rounded to whole pixels. An A4 page at the default 150 DPI comes out 1,240 by 1,754 pixels.

Questions

Does this PDF to JPG converter upload my file?

What JPG quality does it use?
Quality 82 on the browser's 0 to 100 scale. That keeps photos and scans clean at a fraction of a PNG's size. Text edges can show faint halos at close zoom.
Can I convert only some PDF pages?
Yes. Choose pages and enter single pages or ranges, such as 1, 3-5. They are converted in page order.
What are the files called?
A single page saves as the PDF's name plus -page-001.jpg. Several pages arrive in a ZIP named after the PDF, holding page-001.jpg, page-002.jpg and so on, so they sort in page order.
Will the text stay selectable in the JPG?
No. JPG is an image format. The source PDF is not changed, so its text remains selectable there.
When should I use PNG instead?
Use PNG for pages made mostly of text, charts, diagrams or flat colour. PDF to PNG uses the same checked export without lossy compression.
What does the output check prove?
It opens every generated JPG and checks that its width and height match the selected PDF page at the requested DPI. A failed result is not offered for download.
Why did a large page fail at 300 DPI?
One page may not exceed 40 million pixels. A poster or a drawing sheet can pass that at 300 DPI. DPI applies to the whole run, so convert that page on its own at 150 DPI instead of getting a cut-off image.
