What the free plan actually allows
On 20 August 2026 the plan table at smallpdf.com/pricing marked the core tools on the free plan with the words daily download limit. It did not print the number anywhere in the page, so this page will not quote one. What the table does show clearly is which features are switched off.
Strong compression, batch compress, batch convert, editing text and text recognition were all marked unavailable on the free plan. The AI tools were capped at up to four documents and twenty to thirty prompts a day, and signing at two documents to sign or request a month.
What pdfpix gives away for nothing
pdfpix needs no account and no sign-in, and it has no daily counter. Compress takes a target in kilobytes and runs four methods against it in your tab. There is no stronger paid mode held back, because there is no paid tier for the browser tools at all.
That is possible because nothing is uploaded, so there is no server bill to recover per file. A hosted tier may arrive for the work a browser tab genuinely cannot do, such as text recognition on a long scan, and it would not move these tools behind it.
The features Smallpdf has and pdfpix does not
Smallpdf reads scanned pages with text recognition and edits text on the page. pdfpix does neither, and if your job is one of those two, stop reading comparisons and use Smallpdf or a desktop editor. Office conversion and signing used to be on that list and are not any more: Word to PDF, PDF to Word, Excel to PDF, PDF to Excel and Sign PDF all run in the tab and check their own output.
The pdfpix set is still narrow: size, page order, rotation and cropping, images in and out, the Word and Excel pairs, form fields, signatures, passwords, stamps, redaction, metadata and repair. The tool list is the honest boundary. PowerPoint, text recognition and page editing sit outside it and are somebody else's product.
The file size ceiling nobody mentions
Smallpdf's table put a fifty megabyte ceiling on files handed to its AI tools, on every plan including the paid ones. That is a server limit, and it is the sort of number that decides whether a scanned bundle goes through at all.
pdfpix has no server, so the ceiling is your own device. A large scan is limited by tab memory rather than by a plan. That cuts both ways: a phone with little free memory will struggle where a server would not have blinked.
How to decide
If you compress a few files a month and never convert anything, the free Smallpdf plan and pdfpix both work, and pdfpix does it without an account or a counter. If you need text recognition or text editing, pay Smallpdf or use a desktop tool.
