A scanned blank page is not empty. It holds a full picture of an empty sheet, complete with the grey of the paper and the shadow of whatever was printed on the other side. That is why nothing detects it automatically here, and why you find them by looking at a grid of page thumbnails.

Where the blank pages came from

A document feeder set to scan both sides produces one image per side. Feed single sided paper through it and every second page is a picture of an empty back. Twenty sheets become forty pages, half of them nothing.

The other usual sources are separator sheets that a scanner inserts between documents, and the deliberate blanks in a printed original that exist so that each section starts on a right hand page. Those were doing a job on paper and do nothing on screen.

Why software does not spot them for you

To a program, a scanned blank page is a large image that happens to be almost uniform. It is not an empty page in the sense the file format understands, and testing whether an image is blank enough means picking a threshold that will be wrong for somebody.

Paper is not white either. It is faintly grey, it picks up the shadow of print on the reverse, and a feeder leaves streaks. There is no blank page detector on this site, and a tool that claims one is guessing on your behalf.

Find them by eye

Open the file in Organize pages. Every page is rendered as a thumbnail in a grid, and blanks stand out immediately as pale rectangles among pages with text on them. That is the whole detection method, and on a forty page scan it takes about ten seconds.

Select the blanks and remove them. The blank page route and the page deletion route both describe this job, and both point at the same engine until their own presets ship.

Check before you delete

Look at the pale pages at full size before dropping them. A page with one line of small print at the bottom, a stamp in a corner or a faint signature looks blank in a thumbnail and is not blank at all. Continuation notices and page numbering live on exactly these pages.

The tool will not let you remove everything: it needs at least one page kept. That is a backstop against a stray select-all, not a substitute for looking.

What the cleaned file keeps

The pages you keep are copied whole. Their text stays selectable, their images keep their pixels and their page sizes are unchanged. Nothing is re-rendered, so a scan looks exactly as it did.

The output is then reopened and compared against the input page by page. The text of each kept page has to match exactly and every page has to keep its width and height, or the tool refuses rather than hands you a file. The page count before and after is shown on screen so you can see how many went.

The file gets smaller

Removing half the pages of a duplex scan removes half its images, and on a photographed or scanned document the images are nearly all of the size. This is the cheapest size reduction available, because nothing is re-encoded and nothing loses quality.

If it is still too big afterwards, compress the cleaned file rather than the original, so you are not spending quality on pages you were about to throw away.

Stopping it happening again

If the scanner is yours, the duplex setting is the fix. Scanning single sided paper in double sided mode is the cause of almost every blank page anybody has to delete.
