PDF password help

Nothing in this cluster breaks encryption. Every guide here assumes you know the password, or that the file has an owner password that restricts printing rather than an open password that hides the contents. If you have lost the password to a file you own, no tool on this site can recover it, and the guides say so.

Two different locks

A PDF can carry two passwords and they behave nothing alike. The open password, sometimes called the user password, encrypts the file. Without it no reader will show you a single page. The owner password leaves the file readable but sets flags that ask viewers to block printing, copying or editing.

Owner restrictions are requests, not walls. Many readers honour them and some ignore them. An open password is real encryption, and there is no way around it other than the password.

What pdfpix can do
