How to turn PDF tables into Excel

What table detection can and cannot prove

A PDF records words at page coordinates, not spreadsheet cells. This tool looks for repeated alignment in the native text layer and keeps each detected table separate.

Each cell can contain at most 32,767 UTF-16 units. Most characters use one unit; supplementary characters use two. If a selected cell exceeds this limit, no workbook is created. Deselect its table or use PDF to CSV. The exporter never shortens or splits a cell to make it fit.

The workbook check begins after detection. It proves the XLSX archive, worksheet names and text cells match the selected matrices. It cannot prove a visually merged heading belongs to one column rather than two, so the receipt shows the source beside the first worksheet. To convert a PDF table to Excel the page must carry a native text layer; a scan of a table gives the detector nothing to align.

Does PDF to Excel upload my file?
No. The PDF, detected cells, previews and Excel workbook stay in this browser tab.
Does it work on a scanned spreadsheet?
No. The free browser tool needs native selectable text. It refuses a scan instead of making an empty workbook.
What happens when the PDF has several tables?
By default they go on one worksheet in page order, with an empty row between tables, so the rows of two tables never run together. Choose One per page or One per table to get separate worksheets, up to 128 in one workbook.
Can a cell run as a formula?
No. Every value is written as a text cell. The verifier rejects formulas, macros, external links and hidden worksheets.
What does the workbook check prove?
It proves the workbook reopens with the expected worksheet names, dimensions and cell strings. Table detection is still an inference from PDF coordinates, so the source and worksheet previews are shown together.
What if a column comes out wrong?
Column boundaries are inferred from where the selectable text sits on the page, so a table with merged cells or a wide gap inside one column can break in the wrong place. Compare the source sample with the worksheet preview before you download, and use PDF to CSV when you want a single table as plain text instead.
