Convert a PDF to Apple Pages

Pages cannot open a PDF, and no converter here writes a .pages file. The route is through Word: drop the PDF on PDF to Word, which rebuilds the paragraphs as a .docx and reads it back to prove the text survived, then open that .docx in Pages with File, Open. It works for a PDF with real text. A scanned PDF needs OCR first.

How to convert a PDF to Pages on a Mac

  1. Check that the PDF has text

    Open it in Preview and try to select a sentence. If the pointer highlights words, the conversion will work. If it selects a whole block as a picture, the file is a scan.

  2. Convert the PDF to Word

    Drop the file on PDF to Word. The tool runs in the browser tab, rebuilds the paragraphs and headings, and reads the .docx back to check the text before the download.

  3. Open the .docx in Pages

    Choose File, Open in Pages, or double-click the file if Pages is the default Word opener. Pages converts it into a Pages document and shows an import summary if anything changed.

  4. Save as a Pages document

    Press Command S. Pages saves a .pages file. The original PDF and the intermediate .docx stay untouched, so you can redo any step.

Why there is no direct PDF to Pages converter

Apple publishes no specification for the .pages format, and it changes between versions. A converter that wrote it directly would break with the next Pages update. Every convert PDF to Pages route that actually works goes through a format Pages imports well, and Word's .docx is the one Pages handles best: paragraph styles, tables, lists and images all come across.

PDF to Word is that first step. It reads the text and its positions from the PDF, groups the lines back into paragraphs, keeps headings as headings, and writes a .docx. Before it shows the download it opens the .docx again and counts the characters against the PDF, so a file that lost its text never reaches you. The whole thing runs in the browser tab; the PDF does not leave your machine.

What survives the conversion and what does not

Body text, headings, bold and italic, bulleted and numbered lists and simple tables come through. Page size and margins are set to match the PDF. Pages then reflows the text, so a line that wrapped at one point in the PDF may wrap at a different point in Pages. That is normal: a Pages document is a flow of text, while a PDF is a set of fixed positions.

Scanned PDFs and photos of documents

A scanned PDF holds a picture of each page and no text, so the PDF to Pages converter route produces an empty document. The tool tells you when it finds no text rather than handing over an empty .docx. Run OCR first: Preview on a recent macOS recognises text in a scan when you select it, and a copy of that text can be pasted into Pages. Other ways to get PDF content into Pages

For a page or two, copy and paste works. Select the text in Preview, copy it, and paste it into Pages. Formatting is lost and line breaks appear at the end of every line, but for a short letter it is faster than converting.

To keep a page exactly as it looks, drag the PDF into a Pages document. Pages places it as an image, so the text is no longer editable but the layout is pixel-exact. This is the right choice for a signed form or a certificate that must not change.

Can Pages open a PDF file directly?
No. Pages opens .pages, .docx, .doc, .rtf and text files. A PDF dropped on Pages is inserted as a picture into a new document, which keeps the look but makes the text uneditable.
Is there a PDF to Pages converter for the iPhone?
The same route works there. Convert the PDF to Word in the phone browser, save the .docx to Files, then open it in Pages for iPhone. Pages imports the .docx and saves it as a Pages document.
Why does the text wrap differently in Pages?
