A 2 MB target is 2,048 KB, or 2,097,152 bytes. It is the usual ceiling on application portals and older mail servers, and it is generous enough that most documents reach it without touching image quality. The public bench did not run a 2 MB target, so nothing on this page claims a measured hit rate for it.

How to compress a PDF to 2 MB

What 2 MB is usually asked for

Job portals, grant systems and university application forms cluster on 2 MB. So do mail servers that were configured a decade ago and never revisited. The number is old enough that it predates phone cameras, which is why a single photo of a document can blow through it. Getting that photo to less than 2 MB is one pass through a free browser compressor, not a subscription.

A twenty page scan at 2 MB gives each page about 100 KB of image, which is enough for readable body text and legible signatures. That is the case this target is built for. The compress tool takes the number and works down to it.

The methods that reach 2 MB without visible loss

Four methods race for every target. One rebuilds the document and drops orphaned objects and old revisions. One subsets the embedded fonts to the glyphs the pages draw. One re-encodes the placed images at 150 dpi. One renders each page and re-draws its text on top. The first two change nothing you can see.

On a document that started around 3 or 4 MB, the first two methods often reach 2 MB alone. The tool names the winning method in the result, so you know whether any pixel was touched. That is the difference between a smaller file and a worse one.

When 2 MB is the wrong target

If the file is a hundred megabytes of scanned archive, 2 MB is not compression, it is deletion. Work from the large file page instead, which covers what the browser tab can hold and where the practical ceiling sits.

If the cap is softer than it looks, a 3 MB target keeps half again as much image detail. The extra megabyte is worth having when the pages carry small print or handwriting.

Questions

Is a 2 MB target enough for a scanned document?
For up to about twenty pages, yes. That works out to roughly 100 KB of image per page, which holds readable body text. Past forty pages the per page budget drops below what small print survives, and the result gets hard to read.
Was a 2 MB target part of the published bench run?
No. The bench ran 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB and 1,000 KB targets. This page quotes no hit rate for 2 MB because none was measured. The general result still holds: 55 of 120 cases met their target and no output came back larger than its source.
Can I compress to 2 MB without losing quality?
Often, yes. Two of the four methods never touch a pixel. Whether they are enough depends on how far above 2 MB the source sits and how much of it is images. The result tells you which method won.
What is 2 MB in bytes for an upload form?
2,097,152 bytes if the form counts in binary units, 2,000,000 if it counts in flat millions. The tool uses the binary reading. If a file that fits here is still refused, target 1.9 MB.
