Print four PDF pages on one sheet

The grid and its order

Four per sheet is two columns and two rows. With Page order set to "Across, then down", page 1 sits top left, page 2 top right, page 3 bottom left and page 4 bottom right. Sheet two holds pages 5 to 8 in the same pattern. That is the order a reader expects, and it is the default.

"Down, then across" fills the left column first: page 1 top left, page 2 bottom left, page 3 top right, page 4 bottom right. Use it when the sheet is going to be cut into strips and stacked by column. Both orders exist for the 6, 8, 9 and 16 grids as well.

A page count that is not a multiple of four leaves empty cells on the last sheet. The tool adds no blank pages in N-up mode. Blank pages are a booklet concern, and the booklet guide covers them.

How to make 4 pages into one PDF sheet

Open the N-up tool and choose the file. Leave the mode on N-up and press 4 under pages per sheet. Choose the Sheet size, US Letter or A4 for most printers, and keep Orientation on Portrait for portrait pages. The preview shows the first output sheet with its page numbers before anything is written.

Press the button. The tool embeds every source page into the sheets, writes the file, reopens it and verifies it, then offers the download. A 40 page document comes back as 10 sheets.

How small the text gets

With the default 8 mm margin and 4 mm gutter, a portrait page on a portrait sheet of the same size prints at 45%, on both US Letter and A4. Setting the margin and gutter to 0 raises that to 50%, which is the ceiling: four pages of the sheet's own size cannot exceed half scale. 12 pt text lands between 5.5 pt and 6 pt.

That is fine for a proof sheet, a slide handout or a contact sheet of drawings, and too small for reading a report. A4 pages on an A3 sheet print at 66%, so 12 pt becomes about 8 pt, which reads like a small paperback. If A3 is not an option, two pages per sheet keeps text at 60% and is the better reading layout.

The tool scales pages to fit and never crops them. A page with wide margins of its own wastes part of its cell on white space, so a document laid out with narrow margins fills a 4 pages per sheet pdf far better than one with 25 mm all round.

Slides and landscape pages

A landscape page in a portrait grid cell is limited by the cell width and comes out with space above and below it. Choose Landscape as the sheet orientation when the pages are landscape, which is the usual case for slides. The scale is the same 45%, but the grid cells match the page shape and the sheet fills.

The tool does not rotate pages to make them fit. Each page keeps the rotation stored in the file, so a slide that displays upright in a viewer displays upright on the sheet.

Reorder before you lay out

The grid follows the file's page order, and the tool has no control for changing it. If a cover page should stand alone or a section should start at the top left of a sheet, open the file in Organize pages first, drag the pages into the order you want, and download that before you lay it out.

Removing pages happens in the same place. Four-up a 41 page document and the last sheet holds one page and three empty cells. Dropping a blank or an unwanted page at the end makes it a clean 10 sheets.

Margins, gutter and cut marks

Margin runs from 0 to 40 mm and Gutter from 0 to 30 mm. The margin is the border around the whole sheet; the gutter is the gap between neighbouring cells. Most desktop printers cannot print the outer 4 to 5 mm of a sheet, so a 0 mm margin clips the edge of each page on paper even though the PDF is complete.

Tick "Add cut marks" to draw 12 pt grey ticks at the sheet edge on every cell boundary. The marks sit in the margin, so with a 0 mm margin they overlap the page edge.

What survives the layout

Every page is embedded as PDF content. Text stays selectable and searchable, vector drawings stay sharp, and images keep their pixels. The output is not a picture of four pages.

Links, comments and form field widgets are dropped, because they are annotations rather than page content. The tool counts them first and asks you to confirm. Document properties are cleared from the output, and an encrypted file is refused until it is unlocked.

Check the sheets before you print

The tool reopens the written file and verifies that the sheet count matches the plan, that every sheet has the chosen size, that the text of each source page is present on its sheet, and that at least 98% of the drawn content survived. Only then does the download appear.
