Remove metadata from a PDF
Metadata found
This scan covers document metadata, XMP, document identifiers and embedded file attachments. It does not inspect words printed on the pages.
Removing PDF metadata
Metadata removal complete
Details
See the metadata your PDF carries before removing it. Every supported finding starts selected, the file stays in this tab, and the cleaned result is reopened to prove the selected data is gone while every page and selectable character remains.
How to remove PDF metadata
-
Choose the finished PDF
Press Choose a PDF, or drop the file on the page. Run metadata removal after every other edit so the copy you inspect is the copy you send.
-
Review every finding
The tool lists document fields, software, dates, XMP, identifiers and embedded files. Values remain inside this browser tab.
-
Choose what to remove
Every supported finding starts selected. Clear a finding only when you intend to keep it in the output.
-
Read the check, then download
The output is opened again. Selected findings must be gone, unselected findings must remain, and every page and selectable character must survive.
Metadata is separate from page content
Author, producer, dates, XMP and document identifiers sit around the pages. A name in a footer, a scanned signature and words in a letter are page content. This tool removes the first group. Use Redact PDF for information printed on a page.
Run this tool last. Compressing, merging or editing the cleaned PDF can write a new producer field or modification date, which means that later copy has not been checked.
Where the metadata remover fits
A PDF carries more than the pages you can see. The author name from the machine that made it, the software that produced it, the creation and modification timestamps, the title left over from a template, and an XMP packet repeating most of that again in XML. None of it appears on the page. All of it travels with the file, and any reader can display it in one dialog.
This tool is a metadata remover, not a content editor. It will strip the document information dictionary and the XMP packet, and it leaves every page exactly as it was. Text stays selectable, images stay embedded, pages keep their size. That boundary is deliberate: metadata sits beside the page content in the file, so removing it cannot disturb what the page shows.
Metadata is one of several places private data hides. Privacy scan reports what else the file is carrying before you send it. Redact PDF removes words from the page itself, and Redaction check proves a redaction made elsewhere actually deleted the text rather than drawing a black rectangle over it.
Questions
- Is my PDF uploaded when metadata is removed?
- No. Scanning, removal, verification and download run in this browser tab.
- What metadata can it remove?
- It checks the document information dictionary, XMP metadata, the document identifier and embedded file attachments. Common fields include title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates.
- Can I see the metadata before removing it?
- Yes. Every supported finding is listed with its value before removal.
- Does metadata removal change the pages?
- No. The tool does not redraw page content. The result check compares page count, page sizes and selectable text with the original.
- Will it remove a name printed on a page?
- No. Printed words are page content, not metadata. Use Redact PDF when page content must be destroyed.
- Does it remove the file name?
- No. The file name lives outside the PDF. Rename the downloaded file before sending it if the name reveals private information.
- Why should metadata removal be the last step?
- A tool that rewrites a PDF can add a new producer name or modification date. Finish every other edit first, then inspect and clean the final copy.
