pdfpix vs Online2PDF

Online2PDF publishes its limits, which almost no free tool does: 150 megabytes per file, 200 megabytes in total, up to 30 files, 500 pages without text recognition and 100 with it. Its ceiling is a server. The pdfpix ceiling is your own device memory, which is looser on a laptop and tighter on an old phone.

Publishing those numbers is the right behaviour and worth crediting. Most free tools name a restriction without a value, so you find the wall by hitting it. Online2PDF tells you where the wall is before you start.

The limits on the pdfpix side

pdfpix has no server, so there is no plan ceiling. The real limits are your device memory and two hard caps in the code. Page export refuses a page over forty million pixels, and redaction caps its raster work at 4096 by 4096 pixels per page.

In practice a large scanned bundle is limited by how much memory the tab can hold, and a phone gives up earlier than a laptop. That is a worse answer than a published number, so this page names it rather than claiming pdfpix has no limits.

Batch work

Thirty files in one run is a real advantage. Online2PDF is built for batch conversion and merging, and it will beat a browser tab on a folder of documents every time. If that is the job, use it.

pdfpix works one file at a time, except merge, which needs at least two inputs and joins as many as you give it, and images to PDF, which takes a set of images and lays them out as pages.

What each does with the file

Online2PDF states that uploaded files are never saved and that all data is deleted after conversion. That is a good policy, clearly written, and it still means the document travels to Germany, is processed there and depends on that promise being kept.

pdfpix does the work in the tab, so there is no transfer and no promise required. That matters for the documents where the answer to who else touched this needs to be nobody: medical letters, legal drafts, anything with a national identifier in it.

Choosing

Batch conversion, thirty files, or a format pdfpix does not handle: Online2PDF. A single file that must not leave the machine, an exact size target, or a result you want checked in front of you: pdfpix.
