pdfpix vs PDFescape

PDFescape fills and annotates forms in the browser, and its free online editor needs no install. pdfpix fills existing fields and adds new ones too, without uploading the file, but it has no annotation layer and no text editing. Both fill forms; only one of them uploads the file

PDFescape describes itself as the original online free PDF editor and form filler. It types into form fields, adds text boxes, ticks boxes, draws and annotates, all in a browser, and it does that work on its servers. Fill PDF form completes the existing fields here instead, in the tab, and Create fillable PDF adds fields to a file that has none. Both read the saved document back and check the values before there is a download.

What PDFescape has and pdfpix does not is the annotation layer: text boxes, freehand marks and comments drawn anywhere on the page. pdfpix can put permanent text on a page with the stamp tool, but that is stamping, not annotating, and a stamped word is not a filled field either. A filled field belongs to the form and can be read back by whoever receives it. Do not confuse the two on anything official.

What the free tier does not print

PDFescape says the online tools are always free, and lists convert, compress, merge, page numbers, and text and image editing as Premium. What it does not publish anywhere is the page limit or the file size limit on the free editor. On 20 August 2026 both pdfescape.com/pricing and its feature comparison URL returned a 404.

So treat the free editor's page ceiling as unknown until you meet it. Open a long document early rather than at the deadline, and check the editor's own message when it refuses. This page will not print a page limit it could not verify from PDFescape's own site.

What pdfpix does around the form

The pdfpix set is file handling with a receipt. Page order, rotation and cropping, size targets, passwords, a signature you draw, type or upload, redaction and metadata stripping, each checked against its input before the download appears.

None of it needs an account and none of it uploads anything. That is a narrower promise than PDFescape makes, and it is the reason the checks are possible at all: the file and the verification live in the same tab.

Annotation against redaction

PDFescape can draw a black box over a name. That box is a drawing sitting above the text, and the text underneath survives. Anyone can select it, copy it or pull it out with a command-line tool. This is the single most common way a redaction fails.

The pdfpix redaction tool destroys the marked content instead. It rebuilds the affected pages, deletes the document Names, Outlines, Metadata, AcroForm, OpenAction and additional-actions entries, and then checks the output for the text it was told to remove.

What is the page limit on the PDFescape free editor?
PDFescape does not publish one. On 20 August 2026 its pricing and feature comparison URLs both returned a 404, and its homepage names only which features are Premium. Test a long document early rather than trusting a number from a review site.
Can pdfpix fill in a PDF form?
Yes. Fill PDF form lists the interactive fields a PDF already has, takes your values and writes them back into the fields, then reopens the saved file and compares every value before offering it. Create fillable PDF adds fields to a form that has none. Neither uploads the document. What pdfpix cannot do is annotate or edit the page text around the fields.
Is a black box drawn in PDFescape a real redaction?
No. A drawn box sits above the text and the text survives underneath, where anyone can copy it out. Use a tool that destroys the content. The pdfpix redaction tool rebuilds the page and then checks the removed text is gone.
