How to turn TIFF files into a PDF

  1. Choose TIFF files

What goes into the PDF

Each TIFF frame is decoded in memory, its orientation is applied, and transparent pixels are flattened onto white. The frame is then encoded as JPEG at quality 90. This keeps the decoded width and height, but it does not preserve the TIFF compression stream byte for byte. That is the trade a TIFF to PDF converter makes: convert the pixels once, keep the width and height, and accept a JPEG stream in place of the original.

Where TIFF to PDF fits

TIFF is what scanners, fax gateways and document archives produce, and it is the format the person receiving the file usually cannot open. A multi-page TIFF is worse again: most viewers show the first frame and stop there. Converting the whole stack to a PDF gives every frame a page that any reader will display, in order, on any device.

Each frame is decoded in this browser tab, its recorded orientation is applied, and transparent pixels are flattened onto white so a scan does not arrive as a grey block. The frame is then stored as a JPEG at quality 90, which keeps the decoded width and height but not the original TIFF compression stream. A black and white fax scan is therefore larger as a PDF page than it was as a TIFF frame, while a photographic scan is usually smaller.

When the TIFF records its scanner resolution, that number sets the page size, so a 300 DPI scan comes out at its real paper size instead of a giant sheet. Compress PDF brings a heavy scan set back down, and Merge PDF puts the result beside documents you already have. Going the other way, PDF to TIFF renders PDF pages back into TIFF frames for a system that will accept nothing else.

Are my TIFF files uploaded?

Does it read multi-page TIFF files?
Yes. Every readable TIFF frame becomes one PDF page and appears in the page-order list before conversion.
Does it support BigTIFF?
No. BigTIFF uses a different 64-bit container and is refused with an explanation. Standard TIFF files use version 42 and are supported.
Does TIFF to PDF change image quality?
TIFF frames are decoded and saved into the PDF as JPEG at quality 90. The decoded pixel width and height are kept and checked, but the stored TIFF bytes are not copied unchanged.
What happens to transparent TIFF pixels?
They are flattened onto white because a PDF page needs a visible background.
Does the output become searchable?
No. TIFF contains page images, not selectable characters. This conversion does not run OCR.
What does the TIFF to PDF check cover?
It opens the completed PDF and checks the page count, every page size, and the pixel dimensions of each embedded page image. A failed result is not offered for download.
