Convert PDF to Google Slides

Google Slides cannot open a PDF. It imports PowerPoint files and inserts images, so a PDF reaches Slides by two routes: convert the PDF to a .pptx in this browser tab and import that, which keeps the text editable, or render the pages as images and place one per slide, which keeps the look. This guide gives both and the page setup that stops letterboxing.

How to convert PDF to Google Slides with editable text

  1. Convert the PDF to PPTX

    Open PDF to PowerPoint, choose the PDF, and let it write one slide per page with the text editable. It reads the .pptx back and compares the text before the download.

  2. Put the PPTX where Slides can see it

    Leave it in Downloads, or upload the .pptx to Drive. This is the point at which the content reaches Google.

  3. Import the slides

    In a new or existing Slides deck choose File, Import slides, pick the .pptx from Drive or Upload, select All, and click Import slides.

  4. Check fonts and text boxes

    Slides substitutes Google fonts for the deck's fonts. Read each slide for line breaks that moved and text boxes that overflow.

What Slides accepts

File, Open and File, Import slides in Google Slides take Google Slides files and PowerPoint .pptx files. Dropping a PDF into Drive stores it and previews it, and Open with offers Google Docs, which extracts text, but never Slides. There is no setting that changes this. A PDF reaches Slides only as images or after becoming a .pptx.

The choice between the two routes is the choice between text and look. A .pptx import gives editable text boxes and substituted fonts, with the layout close to where it was. Images keep every pixel of the design and nothing is editable.

Convert PDF to Slides through a PPTX

PDF to PowerPoint converts a native-text PDF in this browser tab: one slide per page, with the page's text placed on the slide as editable text. Before the download it reads the .pptx back and compares its text with the PDF's text layer, so a missing line is reported before the deck reaches Slides. The PDF stays in the tab; the .pptx is what you then put in Drive, so the content reaches Google only at that step, and only in the form you chose.

File, Import slides in Slides then brings the slides in. Text arrives as text boxes, images as images, and the fonts are substituted with Google fonts. What the converter keeps and what no converter can keep is in Convert PDF to PowerPoint.

Import PDF to Google Slides as page images

PDF to PNG renders each page in this browser tab at 96 dpi by default, and its DPI control raises that; 150 dpi is sharp on any projector, and a deck of twenty pages stays under the size at which Slides gets slow. The PDF stays in the tab. The PNGs reach Google's servers when you insert them, which is the point at which the content leaves your machine.

Insert, Image accepts one image at a time. For a long PDF, put the PNGs in a Drive folder first, then Insert, Image, Drive lets you pick them from the folder without leaving Slides. Each still goes on its own slide. A scanned PDF has no text for any converter to place, and this is its only route. Select-all in the PDF reader tells you which you have: words highlight individually in a text PDF, and as one block in a scan.

Page setup decides whether the pages fit

Slides defaults to 16:9. A portrait A4 page placed on a 16:9 slide sits in the middle with wide bars either side. File, Page setup, Custom, with the page's own proportions, makes the slide the shape of the page so each image fills it. Enter 21 by 29.7 centimetres for A4 portrait, 8.5 by 11 inches for Letter, or leave 16:9 for a PDF that was exported from a widescreen deck.

Set the page size before importing or inserting. Changing it afterwards rescales what is already placed and leaves each picture off-centre. An imported .pptx carries its own slide size, and Slides asks whether to keep the original size or adopt the deck's; keep the original when the PDF was portrait.

Showing the PDF without converting it

Sometimes the deck is a means to an end and the end is showing pages full screen. Every PDF reader has a full-screen or presentation mode, and Drive's own viewer opens a shared PDF full screen for anyone with the link, which serves a remote audience without a Slides deck at all. Text into Google Docs, and the way back

When the PDF's words matter more than its pages, Drive's Open with Google Docs extracts them into a document, which can then be pasted into slides one section at a time; the behaviour and limits are in Add a PDF to Google Docs.
