Convert a ZIP to PDF

A zip is a container, not a document, so there is no single conversion. The answer depends entirely on what is inside it. Unzip it first, look at what came out, then pick the route: images become pages, PDFs get joined, and office documents have to be exported one at a time.

Nothing about a zip describes a document. It is a box holding files of any kind, in folders, compressed. Asking to convert one to a PDF is like asking to convert a drawer, and any zip to PDF converter that claims to do it is guessing at what you meant.

So the first step is always the same. Unzip it and look. Every desktop system opens a zip without extra software, and what you find decides everything after that.

Look inside first

Sort the contents by type. Photographs and scans go one way, PDFs another, Word and Excel files a third. Most zips hold one kind, which makes this quick, and the mixed ones need each group handled separately before anything is joined.

Note the file names while you are there. Order almost always matters in the finished document, and file names are usually the only record of what the order was meant to be.

If it holds images

Images to PDF turns JPG and PNG files into one document, one page per image. Pick A4 or Letter to get a consistent page, or match the image so each page is exactly the shape of its picture. Margins can be none, narrow or standard.

It detects the format from the file's own bytes rather than its extension, so a file named .jpg that is really something else is refused rather than mangled. It does not resample, so the pixels you supply are the pixels in the PDF.

If it holds PDFs

Then it is a merge. The merge tool takes the files, lets you set the order, and joins them in the browser tab. It needs at least two, and it refuses password-protected files, which have to be unlocked first.

Before it hands anything over it reopens the result and compares it against the sources page by page: the page count, the exact text of every page, and every page size. Bookmarks, form fields, page labels and attachments do not survive, and it names which files carry them first.

If it holds Office documents

Each one has to be exported to PDF by the software that made it. Word, Excel, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs all export directly. There is no shortcut here, and nothing on this site converts an office file, because doing it properly needs the original application.

Keeping the order

Unzipping usually sorts by name, and a name-sorted list puts page 10 before page 2 unless the numbers were padded. Rename the files with leading zeros before you start, and the order stays right at every later step.

Both tools also let you drag items into place before running, so a small set can simply be arranged by hand. Check the order on screen rather than trusting the sort, especially when the files came from somebody else's machine.

No. A PDF is a sequence of pages, so nested folders flatten into one running order. When the structure carries meaning, convert each folder on its own and keep the results as separate files.
