# Sign a PDF on your iPhone or Android phone

On an iPhone or iPad, Markup in the Files and Mail apps signs a PDF with a finger or an Apple Pencil. On Android, or on any phone, Sign PDF opens in the browser, lets you draw, type or upload a signature, places it on the pages you pick, and checks every mark before the download. Nothing is uploaded and nothing to install.

## Steps

1. **Open the PDF.** Open the PDF from the Files app, or tap the attachment in Mail.
2. **Turn on Markup.** Tap the Markup button, the pen tip in a circle, to show the drawing tools.
3. **Add a signature.** Tap the plus button, choose Add Signature, and sign with a finger or an Apple Pencil. Tap Done.
4. **Place it and save.** Drag the signature onto the line, pinch to size it, and tap Done. Share the signed PDF back from the same screen.

## Sign a PDF on an iPhone

Markup is built into the Files app and into Mail, so a contract that arrived as an attachment can be signed where it sits. Open the PDF, tap the Markup button, tap the plus button and choose Add Signature. Sign in the box with a finger, tap Done, and drag the signature onto the line.

The iPhone keeps the signature, so the next document takes seconds. The result is a normal PDF that opens on any computer. Reply from the same screen and the signed copy goes back as the attachment.

## Sign documents on an iPad

The steps on an iPad are the same as on an iPhone, and an Apple Pencil gives a much cleaner line than a finger. With a Pencil you can also start writing straight on the page and Markup opens for you.

On a larger screen the page shows at a size close to paper, which makes it easier to place initials on every page of a lease or a tenancy agreement without zooming in and out.

## Sign a PDF on Android

Android phones come from many makers, and each ships its own PDF viewer. The route that works the same on every one is the browser. Open [Sign PDF](https://pdfpix.com/sign-pdf/) in Chrome, pick the file from Downloads or Google Drive, and draw your signature with a finger, type your name, or upload a photo of it on white paper.

Put the signature on each page that needs it, drag it into place, and download. The tool reopens the signed file and confirms every mark is visible before the download appears, so you send a file you have already seen. Adobe Acrobat Reader for Android is a free app that signs as well, if you prefer an app.

## Sign PDF in the browser on any phone

Sign PDF works the same in Safari on an iPhone and in Chrome on Android. The file and the signature stay in the tab, so a payslip or an ID document is not sent anywhere. It suits a phone that does not have Markup, a shared work handset where you would rather not save a signature, and a document that needs the same signature on several pages.

Sign last. Fill every field, join any extra pages and then sign, so the signature sits on the final document. [Fill a PDF form on your phone](https://pdfpix.com/guides/fill-a-pdf-form-on-your-phone/) covers the fields, and [add a signature to a PDF](https://pdfpix.com/guides/add-a-signature-to-a-pdf/) covers getting a clean image of your handwriting.

## When a drawn signature is enough

A drawn signature is what most forms, leases and permission slips ask for. Some tenders and official filings ask for a certificate signature that a machine can verify instead, and those need a certificate from an authority the recipient trusts.
