# PDF password help

Canonical HTML: [https://pdfpix.com/guides/passwords/](https://pdfpix.com/guides/passwords/)

Nothing in this cluster breaks encryption. Every guide here assumes you know the password, or that the file has an owner password that restricts printing rather than an open password that hides the contents. If you have lost the password to a file you own, no tool on this site can recover it, and the guides say so.

## Two different locks

A PDF can carry two passwords and they behave nothing alike. The open password, sometimes called the user password, encrypts the file. Without it no reader will show you a single page. The owner password leaves the file readable but sets flags that ask viewers to block printing, copying or editing.

Owner restrictions are requests, not walls. Many readers honour them and some ignore them. An open password is real encryption, and there is no way around it other than the password.

## What pdfpix can do

[Unlock PDF](https://pdfpix.com/unlock-pdf/) takes a file and a password you supply, and writes a copy with the encryption removed. The password is used in the tab and never leaves it, and it is never sent to analytics. That is the whole feature. It is not a cracker.

If you want to add protection instead, use the protect side of the same tool to set an open password on a file you have.

## When the answer is not a tool

If the file came from a bank, a payroll system or a government portal, the password is usually derived from something you know: a birth date, the last digits of an account, a customer number. Check the covering email before you look for software.

If the sender is reachable, asking them to resend without a password is faster than anything else on this page.

## Questions and answers

### Does pdfpix remove password in PDF document files?

It removes protection from a file when you type the correct password. It writes a decrypted copy in your browser tab. It cannot open a file whose password you do not have.

### Can pdfpix remove PDF document password protection I have forgotten?

No. Forgotten open passwords cannot be recovered here, and any site that claims otherwise for strong encryption is either guessing common passwords or lying about what it does.

### Is my password sent anywhere?

No. It is used inside the browser tab to decrypt the file and is never transmitted, stored, or included in any analytics event.

### What if the file opens but will not print?

That is an owner password, not an open password. The file is not encrypted against you. Unlocking clears the restriction flags so a viewer stops blocking print and copy.
