# Put PDFs together

Canonical HTML: [https://pdfpix.com/guides/merge/](https://pdfpix.com/guides/merge/)

These guides put PDF files together into one document. The right steps depend on what you are starting from: existing PDFs, loose photos, or pages you scanned one at a time. All three end with a single file, but they take different routes, so pick the guide that matches what is on your disk right now.

## Start from what you have

If every part is already a PDF, use [Merge PDFs](https://pdfpix.com/merge-pdf/). Drop the files in, set the order, and download one file. Page order follows the order you set, and nothing is re-rendered.

If the parts are photos or screenshots, they need to become pages first. [Images to PDF](https://pdfpix.com/images-to-pdf/) does that in one step, so there is no reason to build a document per image and merge afterwards.

If you scanned a stack one page at a time and ended up with a folder of single-page files, treat them as PDFs and merge, but check the order before you download. Scanners name files in ways that do not always sort the way you expect.

## Order is the part people get wrong

Merging is easy. Getting page 7 to sit after page 6 is the part that fails. Set the order in the tool rather than trusting the file names, and open the result before you send it. One reversed pair is invisible until someone else finds it.

If a merged file needs pages moved after the fact, [Organize pages](https://pdfpix.com/organize-pages/) can reorder and delete without building the document again.

## What merging does to the file

Merging copies page objects from each source into one new document. Text stays selectable, links inside a page keep working, and page size stays whatever each source page was. Mixed page sizes stay mixed, which surprises people who expect a merge to normalise everything to A4.

## Questions and answers

### How to put together a PDF from several files?

Open Merge PDFs, add every file, drag them into the order you want, then download. The whole thing happens in your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue.

### Is there a limit on how many files I can merge?

pdfpix sets no limit. The practical ceiling is your device memory, because every file is held in the tab while it works. Very large scans are the first thing to hit that.

### Can I merge images and PDFs in one go?

Not in a single step. Turn the images into a PDF first with Images to PDF, then merge that with the rest. Two steps, both in the browser.

### Do the merged pages stay searchable?

Yes. Merging copies the existing page content, so any text that was selectable before is still selectable afterwards. Scans stay unsearchable, because they were images to begin with.
