# Edit a PDF

pdfpix cannot edit PDF text. These guides say what a PDF editor actually has to do, why it is hard, and which software does it well. They also cover the jobs people call editing that are not editing at all, like filling a form or dropping a page, which you can do here.

## Why a PDF is hard to edit

A PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores instructions to draw glyphs at coordinates. There is often no record of which glyphs form a word, let alone a sentence that could reflow. Changing one word means finding those runs, matching the embedded font, re-measuring the line, and shifting everything after it.

A real PDF editor rebuilds that structure by guessing. It works well on files made from Word and badly on files made by a typesetter. That is the difference between the products, and it is why free tools that claim to modify PDF online usually re-render the page as an image instead.

## What to use for real edits

Adobe Acrobat Pro is the reference implementation and the most reliable. Foxit and Nitro cost less and handle common documents. Sejda edits text in the browser for short documents. LibreOffice Draw opens a PDF and lets you move text boxes, free, though layout often shifts.

If you have the original file the PDF was exported from, edit that and export again. It is faster than every option above and the result is correct.

## Questions and answers

### Can I edit a PDF for free?

Yes, for some jobs. LibreOffice Draw is free and edits text with some layout drift. Sejda edits short documents in a browser. For page level changes, pdfpix does it here at no cost.

### Why does my edited text change font?

Because the original font was subset into the file. Only the glyphs actually used were embedded, so the editor has nothing to draw new characters with and substitutes a font it has.

### Is it safe to edit a PDF online?

It depends on where the file goes. Any editor that changes text is doing the work on a server, so your document is uploaded. Read the retention policy before you send anything sensitive.

### How do I black out text so it is really gone?

Use Redact PDF. It destroys the marked content rather than drawing a rectangle over it, then checks the output for text that survived underneath.
