# Convert PDF to PowerPoint

PowerPoint cannot open a PDF, so converting one means either rebuilding each page as a slide of editable text, or placing each page as one picture on a slide. The first keeps the text editable and loses some of the design. The second keeps the look and loses the text. This guide shows how to change a PDF to PowerPoint each way and how to check the result.

## Steps

1. **Choose the PDF.** Open PDF to PowerPoint and drop the file on the page, or pick it. It is read in this browser tab.
2. **Let it write the deck.** The tool writes one slide per page and places the page's text on the slide as editable text. A page with no text layer gives a slide with no text.
3. **Read the count.** Before the download the tool reads the .pptx back and compares its text with the PDF's text layer, so a missing caption is reported here rather than found on stage.
4. **Open and check in PowerPoint.** Download the .pptx and open it. Check fonts, line breaks and any chart that arrived as a picture. Save under a new name.

## What PowerPoint can and cannot do with a PDF

File, Open in PowerPoint does not accept a PDF. Insert, Object, Create from file places a PDF object, but it needs Acrobat or Reader installed to render, shows the first page only, and opens in that reader when clicked. Nothing in PowerPoint reads a PDF's text layer and turns it into slides. That job belongs to a converter, and the converter has to decide what a slide is.

A PDF that was exported from a slide deck has one page per slide and an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 4:3, and converts back well. A PDF of a report has A4 or Letter pages of running text, and no converter turns that into a good deck, only into a deck of pages.

## How can I convert a PDF to PowerPoint in the browser

## What stays editable and what does not

A converter that rebuilds slides reads each text run and places it at the same position, and places each image at its position. Titles, bullet lists and captions become editable. Fonts are kept when installed and substituted when not, which shifts line breaks. Charts arrive as pictures or as their drawn shapes, because the PDF holds the chart's lines and fills, not its data. Slide masters, layouts, themes, animations, transitions and speaker notes do not exist in a PDF and cannot come back.

Text that was outlined or converted to curves in the original, and every page of a scanned deck, has no text layer and becomes a picture regardless of the converter. A converter that promises editable text from a scan is promising OCR, and OCR of slide text at odd sizes and colours is poor.

## How to turn PDF into PPT slides that keep the look

Every page as a picture on its own slide is the conversion that cannot go wrong on the design. [PDF to PNG](https://pdfpix.com/pdf-to-png/) renders each page in this tab at 96 dpi by default, and its DPI control raises that: 150 dpi is sharp on a projector, and 300 dpi is for a deck people will zoom into. The download is one PNG per page in page order. In PowerPoint on Windows, Insert, Photo Album, New Photo Album, File/Disk, select all the PNGs, Create makes one slide per picture; on a Mac, drag the images onto the slide thumbnail pane. Set Design, Slide Size to the page's proportions first.

## How to convert PDF to PPT rather than PPTX

PPT is the 1997 to 2003 format. Every converter, including the browser tool, writes PPTX, which PowerPoint 2007 and later open. For a system that still needs PPT, open the PPTX in PowerPoint and Save As, PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation. Newer features are flattened on the way and PowerPoint lists what changed in the compatibility checker.

## Google Slides and other destinations

Google Slides cannot import a PDF either. It takes the .pptx the browser tool writes through File, Import slides, or the PNG route through Insert, Image. ### Can PowerPoint open a PDF file?

No. File, Open rejects PDFs. Insert, Object shows the first page through Acrobat if it is installed. A converter or page images are needed for the rest.

### Will the text be editable after converting PDF to PowerPoint?
